In Depth History Of The BMW Vehicle
The German multinational company, BMW had its beginnings in Munich, Germany in the year 1916. The automobiles and motorcycles manufacturing giant, at its early stage, was into the manufacturing of aircraft engines, which is produced from 1917 to 1918 and again from 1933 to 1945.
The Bavarian Motors Works company (BMW) is headquartered in Munich, with diverse production plants scattered across different countries in each continent. The German automobile and motorcycle company has grown over the years, with a bevy of design changes; while still maintaining the company’s standard of excellent craftsmanship and high-quality materials.
Right from 1916, the company has grown with diverse models and subsidiary companies to own not only MINI cars but to be the parent company of one of the most prestigious car manufacturers in all time. In 2015, the German auto force became the world’s twelfth-largest producer of motor vehicles, with over 2 million cars produced. Its automobiles are sold under BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce as brand names. Its motorcycles are under the brand name of BMW Motorrad.
BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) is a German-based Automobile manufacturing company founded by Franz Josef Pop in 1916 and was actually a combination of 3 companies Rapp Motoren Werke, Bayerische Flugzeuwerke and Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach. The company originally began as a manufacturer of airplane engines.
In 1922 BMW relocated its production center from its original location to Munich. In 1923 BMW expanded from making just airplane engines to including motorcycles. The company’s first motorcycle marked an important change in the company since the motorcycle was the first entire vehicle that the company ever made.
In 1928 BMW began working on their first car using a design borrowed from the Austin Motor Company. In 1932 BMW actually built its first car using it’s own design.
World War II And It’s Effect On BMW
World War II saw BMW return to its airplane manufacturing roots as the company began making airplanes for the German Air Force and motorcycles for the German Army. As early as 1940 BMW began employing civilians in their manufacturing plants since many of the company’s workers were called into service. In 1942, with the civilian employees unable to be able to keep up with the manufacturing demands of the war POWs were pressed into service against their will.
The conditions these prisoners faced in the BMW factory in order to meet the production demands were actually inhumane.
However, it should be noted that BMW has since acknowledged their treatment of prisoners and expressed their deep regrets for their actions during the war.
Post War BMW
After the war, the Allies took over the BMW production plants and began dismantling it and sending the equipment overseas as part of the war reparations that BMW was forced to pay for their contributions to the war effort. During this time BMW was forced to manufacture pots and pans just to keep their company from being totally destroyed.
Once BMW regained some control over their manufacturing facilities they struggled to begin again but finally made their first post-war car in 1951. The car called simply the 501 was a large saloon vehicle. While the car did not have a very long life (it was only produced until 1958) it re-established the company as a producer of high-quality technological advanced automobiles.
However, due to the costly reparations, BMW was forced to pay after the war they remained on shaky ground, however with the help of the German government BMW was able to restructure under new management in 1960.
This was a new start for BMW and the company flourished during the 1960s and 70s. It was also in the 1970s that BMW began expanding internationally. In 1972 the company launched their motors ports subsidiary.
Over time BMW became known as a leader of a luxury and technologically advanced vehicles. In 1994 BMW opened their first production plant in the United States. BMW now owns Rolls Royce.
